HISTORY/OVERVIEW
From its inception in 1900, to its move to Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1919, and to the present day, Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) has pursued a mission of excellence in education in an atmosphere of Christian faith. ENC is one of eight liberal arts colleges supported by the International Church of the Nazarene in the United States, and one of a network of educational institutions supported by the church around the world. Its location in a suburb of Boston places the college in one of the great hubs of educational, cultural, and scientific endeavors of the world.
ENC is coeducational and offers resources and opportunities for participation, advancement and service to all students regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, veteran status, or any other category protected by law. Although many of the students come to ENC from Nazarene church backgrounds, over 30 denominations are represented in the nearly 1300 students on campus and in the adult education program.
Besides strategic location and equal opportunity, an additional advantage ENC students enjoy over students in larger universities is greater personal contact with faculty members who are dedicated not only to their scholarly activities, but also to their personal lives of faith. Rather than sheltering students from challenging ideas and controversial issues, ENC professors encourage debate of ideas and issues as a means of learning, and to search for truth, greater depth, and personal meaning in one’s faith. With a student/faculty ratio of 15:1, traditional undergraduate students enjoy the rare opportunity to know their professors personally within the context of the classroom and at extracurricular activities.
The mission of ENC is to serve God, the church, and the World by providing a quality liberal arts education to students of all ages. Consistent with its Wesleyan heritage, ENC seeks to create and maintain an environment which awakens and fosters truth, righteousness, justice and holiness as made possible by God’s transforming grace through Jesus Christ.
Faithfulness to its Wesleyan heritage requires that as a community of scholar servants ENC:
- Recognizes the primacy of Scriptural authority;
- Is consciously and proudly part of the broad, ancient tradition of the Christian faith;
- Is genuinely ecumenical; affirming justification by grace through faith; recognizing that God’s grace “transforms” as well as “pardons”;
- Is an effective apologist of the Christian faith;
- Commits themselves to discipleship and accountability; and
- Is committed to compassionate ministries.
ENC operates with an independent Board of Trustees, but maintains a close relationship with the Church of the Nazarene. The college seeks to serve the Church of the Nazarene in particular and the Church in general by equipping people for Christian leadership and service to humanity. As a Christian community, ENC strives to embody academic excellence, personal integrity, and respect for each individual. The entire educational program encourages each person to become a creative and redemptive force in the world through integration of the richness of the Christian tradition and the human quest for understanding.
ENC has made a commitment to opportunity for education at a variety of levels.
Traditional Undergraduate Program
The traditional undergraduate liberal arts program is at the center of ENC’s mission. ENC offers over 50 academic programs designed for traditional college-aged students. Approximately 650 students are enrolled full-time and most reside on campus. Undergraduate degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, and the Associate of Arts. An extensive teacher education program is available to undergraduate students as are pre-professional programs in law, medicine and health-related fields. The college’s fine standing among institutions of higher learning in New England enables ENC to offer several cooperative programs with colleges and universities in Boston.
ENC offers several opportunities for students who wish to enhance their undergraduate education with studies abroad. The college cooperates with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities Studies Abroad programs in Russia, Egypt, Central America and other locations.
Adult Studies Program
With a current enrollment of 450, the Adult Studies Program offers accelerated programs at the Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. The Master of Science in Management offers a concentration in Leadership. The Bachelor programs are offered in a format that enables working adults, with a significant amount of transfer credit, to complete a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in two years, meeting one evening per week for class sessions. Adult Studies also offers a similarly structured Associate of Arts degree in General Business. Each program’s curriculum, instruction, and administration combine theoretical knowledge with the student’s background of practical experience.
Graduate Program
ENC’s graduate program (current enrollment: 95) is designed to provide professional preparation and certification for students in service-oriented careers such as education and counseling. Degrees offered include the Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy and the Master of Education. Marriage and Family Therapy candidates are be eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Most courses are offered during the late afternoon and evening to accommodate working adults. Nontraditional programs are offered within the Graduate Program in several areas. Saturday M.Ed. licensure programs in Educational Administration, Special Needs, and Reading are available.
All serious applicants are encouraged to visit the ENC web site (www.enc.edu) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the mission and scope of ENC.

The Library
The college library, named for the Nease family (Presidents Floyd and Stephen, and Registrar Madeline), provides collections and services to support all programs of the college. The current facility (29,000 square feet) opened in 1992 and has yet to reach its half-life. Research has begun to explore remodeling the ground floor to create a Learning Commons which would provide space, workstations and seating to facilitate group and individual work with technology-based learning.
The collection stands at about 100,000 volumes. The library subscribes to nearly 500 periodical titles in paper, but has electronic access to 10,952 full-text titles.
The library has launched a long-range planning process to focus its services to meet the needs of students, both from the traditional campus and the Adult Studies programs.
The library shares a catalog and delivery system with the Old Colony Library Network and participates in the Massachusetts regional system through SEMLS. Both of these cooperative efforts result in significant savings and increase the college’s profile in the local community.
Library staff is heavily involved in supporting the teaching and learning environment on campus. Through participation in GIRT (Group for Instructional Resources and Technology) and administration of the budget for classroom furniture and technology, librarians serve the faculty and students in the classroom and labs as well as in the library.

Location
Situated on the coast of Massachusetts, Eastern Nazarene College is located in the City of Quincy, just south of Boston. ENC is accessible by highway (Interstate 95 and State 3A), air (Logan International Airport), rail (MBTA/Amtrack), and ship (Port of Boston). The campus is within walking distance of beautiful Quincy Bay with its twenty-four miles of coastline.
ENC students, faculty and staff enjoy the many historical and cultural benefits of the Quincy/Boston landscape. The greater Quincy/Boston area is the home of top-flight symphony orchestras, such as the Boston Symphony, first-class museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, and first-run theatre. ENC is in the center of the educational universe with Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology a few transit stops away.
Sporting and recreational activities can readily be found in the coastal communities of Quincy and its adjacent cities and towns. Within a thirty-mile radius are at least three PGA quality golf courses, extensive boating and fishing opportunities, and exciting downhill and cross country skiing in season. In addition, major league sports franchises in the area include the World Champion Boston Red Sox, the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots, the legendary Boston Celtics Basketball team, and the Boston Bruins Hockey Team.
ENC is 90 minutes from the dunes of Cape Cod and two hours from the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. The Berkshire woods, two hours to the West, are as easy to reach as the rocky cliffs of the Maine coast to the North.
The delicate ecosystem that is represented in the coastal plains and waterways of the city of Quincy is of major importance to ENC science students just as the preservation of historical and literary treasures in the city of two presidents is to our humanities scholars. Eastern Nazarene College is in a unique and valuable location.

The next President of Eastern Nazarene College will provide overall leadership for the organization. This will include leading the faculty and administrative staff while simultaneously setting and attaining aggressive financial management, operating and academic programming goals.
The President is the primary spokesperson for the college. S/he will set the direction and tone for fundraising. The ability to inspire and motivate donors, ask directly for their support and cultivate ongoing relationships is an essential strength.
The Administrative Council works with the President in providing leadership to the college. The current structure of the Administrative Council is:
- Vice President - Academic Affairs / Academic Dean
- Vice President Admissions & Financial Aid
- Vice President - Student Development & Retention
- Director of Adult & Graduate Studies
- Controller
- Director of Development
- Director of Constituent Relations
- Director of Business Services
Desired Background
The candidate will ideally have an earned doctorate or terminal degree coupled with significant leadership experience in higher education; however, these are not a firm requirement. Other attributes and qualifications could be just as important in leading Eastern Nazarene College.
The next President should have an impressive array of business management and leadership experience. S/he will probably have a background in leading organizations that offer reasonably comparable types of management problems and challenges. A balance of administrative leadership and classroom experience would be desirable to demonstrate comprehension of the process of education at the "grassroots" level as well as in management of a whole organization.
The Christian liberal arts institution can be compared to a three-legged stool. One leg of the stool represents the strategic and financial side of running the institution as a business. The second leg represents academics in terms of scholastic excellence and rigor. The third leg of the stool represents the integration of the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, occupational and physical needs of the students. A track record indicating a successful balance of these three tensions is central to the successful candidate.
PROFESSIONAL/PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Christian Commitment
The next President of Eastern Nazarene College should:
- Be a spiritually mature Christian, displaying Christ-centered servant leadership;
- Model a spiritually mature form of servant leadership that integrates faith with work, after the manner of Jesus Christ;
- Live the values of integrity, trust, service, and respect for others; and
- Be able to articulate and apply Biblical principles and possess the ability to be at ease with people from diverse theological and denominational backgrounds.
- This person should have personal warmth that invites trust.
- S/he must also possess personal integrity that never forfeits the trust that is offered.
Visionary Leader
The President of ENC must possess a vision, deeply rooted in the mission of the college, for the larger picture of developing the college, extending from ongoing enrollment and growth issues to fundraising projects.
Engaging Relational Leader
The successful candidate must be able to develop relationships at all levels of Eastern Nazarene College. S/he should enjoy meeting people in both professional and social settings. Building relationships with a broad range of people (students, donors, faculty members, Trustees, denominational members and leaders, leaders in the evangelical world, Christian organization leaders, etc.) both inside and outside Eastern Nazarene College is vital to success in this position.
Collaborative / Collegial
The culture at ENC is collegial. Collaboration is at the heart of a successful working relationship between a college president, faculty, staff and church constituents. The next president of ENC should be noted for the participative and collaborative spirit that permeates his/her administration.
Accessible
The President of ENC must love students and understand what a holistic Christian higher education experience can mean in the student’s life. The students at ENC want a president who is accessible to them and prominently visible in the life of the college. Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities are important at ENC, and the President is expected to participate in these activities as much as possible.
Inclusive
ENC serves a diverse constituency. The President of ENC must be proactive in addressing issues of inclusiveness and diversity. Twenty-nine percent of the student body is other than Caucasian.
Marketing
The next President of ENC must be energized by the marketing potential that surrounds ENC. The success of the adult degree completion program is evidence that major corporations in the area have great educational needs and respond favorably to the ENC educational services. The next President must also develop strong relationships with the District Superintendents and pastors of the Eastern Region of the Nazarene Church.
Communications
Because of the wide variety of constituents, the next President of Eastern Nazarene College must be a well-rounded communicator. S/he should have the ability to communicate with honesty and candor a personal vision for the future of the college to the faculty, staff, students, and various other constituents.
Emphasis on Customer Service
Regardless of the product, today’s consumer is becoming more sophisticated and more demanding. Higher education is not exempt from this. The next President of ENC must understand the college’s customers and place a very high emphasis upon cultivating a culture of excellence in customer service. At ENC the primary customers are the students, their parents, the churches and other bodies that send students, and donors.
THE CHALLENGE
The Board of Trustees at ENC has approved aggressive growth goals for the next ten years:
Traditional Enrollment: 900
Adult Studies Enrollment: 900
Graduate Enrollment: 300
Meeting these enrollment goals and raising the additional funds needed to accommodate such growth are the primary challenges facing the next President of ENC.
